Curatorial context

The MOMI: Vintage & Antique Kimono Show presents a curated selection of traditional Japanese clothing from the end of the Taishō era and the beginning of the Shōwa period (1920s), drawn from the MOMI collection. Professional stylist Kumie Holý, who specializes in Japanese kimonos and makeup for art and film, will guide visitors through the showcase. The presentation will focus on kimonos that embody timeless Japanese aesthetics while also incorporating the avant-garde patterns popular in early twentieth-century Japan and relevant today. The unifying thematic element for the collection is the influence of the creative worlds of independent filmmaker Shūji Terayama and director Seijun Suzuki, whose distinct visual styles and playful approach to traditional film grammar are echoed in the kimono designs. The showcase offers a glimpse into Japan's natural beauty and the magnificent colors of its four seasons, which have historically served as profound inspiration for kimono designs. Following the showcase, a workshop will provide practical advice on incorporating kimonos into everyday wear. This event is part of the accompanying program for the exhibition GA-I-SU-RA.
