Exhibition summary

This exhibition presents the work of Radka Bodzewicz, who draws inspiration from literary works to create expansive visual cycles. Focusing on Goethe's Faust, the exhibition explores universal themes of human desire, the conflict between good and evil, and the consequences of our choices.

Curatorial context

Radka Bodzewicz's artistic practice is deeply rooted in literary inspirations, including poetry, prose, and philosophical texts. She translates timeless themes found in literature into her distinctive visual language, often combining traditional art techniques with new technologies to create extensive, conceptually rich cycles of work. Previously, Bodzewicz has explored canonical literary works such as Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy and John Milton's Paradise Lost. For her exhibition at DOX Centre for Contemporary Art, she turns her attention to another iconic literary piece: Goethe's Faust. Bodzewicz views the Faust narrative as an embodiment of Jungian archetypes of human desire—deeply ingrained patterns that drive and shape human destinies. Within the universal conflict of good and evil, Faust, as interpreted by Bodzewicz, represents our own stories of insatiable longing for knowledge, love, power, and the transgression of boundaries, alongside the fateful and irreversible nature of our decisions and our own 'deals with the devil'.
