Curatorial context

Located within the Mihulka Tower at Prague Castle, this exhibition offers a comprehensive look at the Castle Guard and the historical development of its preceding institutions. Visitors are taken on a journey through time, exploring the guard's role from the 16th century to the establishment of Czechoslovakia in 1918, and its subsequent transformations through various political regimes. The exhibition highlights key moments, such as the temporary role of the Czech Sokol Society and the Castle Guard's restructuring after the communist era, featuring exhibits and historical scenes. A notable item displayed is the iconic BMW K75 motorcycle, symbolizing the rebirth of the Castle Guard after November 1989 and its involvement in accompanying state visits. The narrative progresses through distinct historical phases: the protection of monarchs from the 16th century until 1918, the period under the Government Army of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia following the German occupation in 1939, and the rebuilding of the Guard after 1945. The exhibition also addresses how the Castle Guard lost its elite status to become a symbolic unit of the Ministry of the Interior during the communist regime, before regaining its former standing after the socio-political changes of November 1989.
