Exhibition summary

Explore the historical Casemates of Vyšehrad, a complex system of underground corridors built in the 17th and 18th centuries. The main Gorlice Hall, the largest casemate space, now serves as a gallery housing six original Baroque statues from Charles Bridge.

Curatorial context

The Vyšehrad Casemates are an extensive underground network of corridors constructed during the 17th and 18th centuries as part of the bastion fortification system. These passages, featuring ventilation shafts and storage alcoves, total over a kilometer in length across four independent sections. The largest space within this complex is the Gorlice Hall, built between 1656 and 1678. Originally intended as a troop assembly area and ammunition store, it later served as a bomb shelter. Since the 1990s, the Gorlice Hall has been repurposed as a gallery. The gallery currently exhibits six original Baroque statues originally from Charles Bridge. These significant sculptures include 'The Madonna attending to St. Bernard' by M. V. Jackl (1709), 'St. Augustine' and 'St. Nicholas of Tolentino' by J. B. Kohl (1708), 'St. Adalbert' by F. M. Brokoff (1709), 'St. Anna' by M. V. Jackl (1707), and 'St. Ludmila with the infant Wenceslaus' by M. B. Braun (1724).
