Curatorial context

The exhibition 'And We’ll Never Be Parted' sheds new light on the singular artistic couple Anna-Eva Bergman and Hans Hartung. Their careers, marked by a close relationship, separation, and reunion, are presented through more than 300 pieces, including landmark paintings, rarely seen sketches, photographs, studio objects, personal artefacts, correspondence, and artworks gifted to each other. Co-curated by Theo Carnegy-Tan and Pierre Wat, and realised in collaboration with the Fondation Hartung-Bergman, the exhibition offers an intimate insight into a decades-long artistic dialogue shaped by separation, reunion, and lasting creative kinship. Bergman and Hartung, despite their closeness, maintained distinct styles while consistently sharpening each other's artistic approaches. They drew inspiration from similar sources like natural elements, the cosmos, and music, interpreting them in inimitable ways. This exhibition, the first to place them in dialogue, explores the interplay of their difference and commonality, creating a shared space in painting. Alongside masterpieces from pivotal career moments, the exhibition features never-before-seen sketches and archival material, enriching the understanding of their intertwined worlds.
