Curatorial context

The National Technical Museum (NTM) presents 'Modern Society through the Eyes of Vojta Náprstek' to mark the bicentennial of Náprstek's birth. The exhibition delves into his forward-thinking concepts of modern society during the second half of the 19th century, showcasing technical innovations he gathered from his visit to the 1862 London World Exhibition. These objects, intended to educate Czech society, manufacturers, and craftsmen, span various categories including household management (with a focus on gas cooking, which Náprstek championed), trade aids, domestic cultivation and animal keeping equipment, safety and firemen's work models, interior components, units of measurement, scientific artifacts, and travel gear. Originally transferred to NTM in 1943, items from Náprstek’s collection that are closely linked to everyday household life have been frequently displayed. This exhibition now highlights those connected to other technical fields and handicrafts. It also offers insights into Vojta Náprstek's personal life, his family background, extensive travels, and the purchases that led to the establishment of the Czech Industrial Museum. Visitors will learn about the public presentations of his imported technical novelties, which were remarkably successful with contemporary audiences. The exhibition complements NTM's long-term display 'Technology in the Household' and related programming at the Náprstek Museum.
