Curatorial context

The Old New Synagogue stands as a testament to centuries of history, recognized as one of the oldest and most valuable European Jewish monuments. Its early Gothic architecture, dating from the 1270s, is characterized by robust stone construction, a high saddle roof with late-Gothic gables, and a distinctive two-aisled interior with ribbed vaults supported by central pillars. The synagogue is adorned with antique furnishings, including a wrought-iron Gothic grille around the speaker's space and a historical banner of the Prague Jewish Community above. Legends surrounding its origins and association with prominent rabbis like Jehud Löwa ben Bezalel (creator of the Golem) and Jecheskel Landau add to its mystique. Administered by the Prague Jewish Community, the Old New Synagogue has been a continuous site for divine services, with a brief exception during 1942-1945. It has undergone reconstructions, including significant work in 1967 and 1998-1999, accompanied by archaeological research. The site is a National Cultural Monument and remains a vital religious and cultural center for the community, hosting regular services and religious ceremonies.
