Curatorial context

The art gallery of the Premonstrates’ monastery at Strahov presents significant pieces of graphic art from the 14th to 19th centuries, installed in the beautiful interiors of the Strahov monastery. Initially established in 1836 and growing until 1950, the collection was dispersed due to the communist regime but was returned and renewed after the restitution of church property in 1989. The current exposition, presented in 1993, features 99 top-quality paintings and sculptures, making it one of the most precious monastery collections in Central Europe. The collection includes complete sets of Bohemian and Mid-European Gothic paintings and sculptures, such as the Strahov Madonna and St. Barbora of Strahov, alongside works from the Rudolphinian painting schools (B. Spranger, J. Heintz). It also features pieces by Bohemian and Mid-European Baroque artists (J. J. Hering, K. Škréta, P. Brandl), Rococo paintings, and works from prominent Bohemian painters of the early 19th century (L. Kohl, F. X. Procházka). Dutch, Flemish, and Italian paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries are also represented. The most famous painting historically associated with the collection is Albrecht Dürer's 'Feast of the Rose Garlands,' which was acquired in 1793 and displayed until 1934 before moving to the National Gallery. A copy of this masterpiece, acquired between 1840-1841 during the restoration of the original, is now on display. The gallery also holds a large collection of graphic and arts-and-crafts objects, predominantly liturgical, dating from the 14th to the 19th centuries, including two significant Gothic relic desks from the early 14th century, notable examples of Gothic goldsmithery.
