Curatorial context

The exhibition 'Agitace ke štěstí' (Agitation for Happiness) delved into the realm of Soviet socialist realist art, presenting a curated selection of paintings with a distinct historical viewpoint. Initially developed for exhibitions in Kassel and St. Petersburg, the presentation at Galerie Rudolfinum, conceived by Petr Nedoma in collaboration with other curators, specifically highlighted painted works. Many of these pieces were previously known to visitors through their appearance in publications from the late 1940s and 1950s. This exhibition offered an opportunity to re-examine Soviet socialist realist art with the benefit of historical perspective. Complementing the visual display, the exhibition incorporated period music and a four-part documentary film about Stalin by Hartmut Kaminsky. This film served not only as a biography but also as a comprehensive lesson on Soviet history, providing crucial context for the art on display. The exhibition was realized in cooperation with the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, with curatorial input from Hubertus Gaßner, Joseph Kiblitsky, Jevgenija Petrova, and Petr Nedoma. The architectural design and graphics for the exhibition were handled by Emil Zavadil.
