Exhibition summary

This exhibition explores the life and work of Alén Diviš (1900-1956), an artist often characterized as an outsider, known for his hallucinatory visions and passionate depictions. The exhibition covers his extensive time spent abroad and his influences, including Cubism, Expressionism, and his anticipation of Art Brut.

Curatorial context

Alén Diviš (1900-1956) is presented as a significant artistic outsider in Czech art, a creator of hallucinatory visions, horror scenes, and passionate religious depictions whose life and work are shrouded in legend. Having spent most of his life abroad, Diviš's journey took him from Paris, where he was briefly imprisoned, through various refugee camps during WWII, to New York, before returning to Czechoslovakia in 1947. His return was marked by a brief period of interest in his work, but the subsequent descent of the Iron Curtain led to his marginalization. Stylistically, Diviš was influenced by Cubism and Expressionism, and his work is seen as anticipating Art Brut and Informal painting. His art was deeply rooted in powerful existential themes, often drawing inspiration from his own tragic experiences and from literature. The exhibition delves into the complex legacy of this under-researched figure in Czech art history. It examines his individual style, which blended potent artistic movements with a deeply personal exploration of human existence. The exhibition highlights Diviš's unique contribution to the art world, positioning him as a precursor to later movements and a testament to the resilience of artistic vision in the face of adversity. Curated by Vanda Skálová and Tomáš Pospiszyl, the exhibition provides a comprehensive look at Diviš's individualistic artistic path.
