Curatorial context
Originally established with Arte Povera and minimalist painting works, the Goetz Collection has expanded significantly to include contemporary German, English, and American art, making it one of Europe's most extensive collections of American art from the 80s and 90s. The exhibition features around fifty American artists, presented through comprehensive series of works. The collection's owner, Ingvild Goetz, commissioned a museum building designed by Herzog & de Meuron near Munich to house and display these works, which have also been exhibited internationally. This presentation in Prague aims to spark discussion on the role of private collectors in contemporary art and the function of state institutions in disseminating cultural values.
The exhibition includes works by Matthew Barney, Carroll Dunham, Robert Gober, Peter Halley, Jenny Holzer, Mike Kelley, Jonathan Lasker, Louise Lowler, Cady Noland, Raymond Pettibon, Paul Pfeiffer, Richard Prince, Jessica Stockholder, and Andrea Zittel. Notable artists featured are Jenny Holzer, known for her light installations, and Mike Kelley, acclaimed for his performance art. The exhibition also highlights painting through artists like Carroll Dunham, Peter Halley, and Jonathan Lasker, photography reflecting social phenomena with Richard Prince and Louise Lawler, and unique contributions from Matthew Barney, whose film 'Cremaster 2' is screened at Divadlo Archa. Younger artists like Andrea Zittel and Paul Pfeiffer are represented through furniture sculptures and video installations, respectively. The exhibition underscores the collection's documentation of the diverse artistic expressions of the American scene in the 80s and 90s, encompassing engaged, reflective, ironic, humorous, and formally demanding art.
