Curatorial context
Ana Mendieta, born in Cuba in 1948, developed a distinctive visual language deeply influenced by her experience of forced exile and the severance of cultural ties following the Cuban Revolution. Her art radicalizes a focus on her roots and identity, expressed through a profound merging of the human being with the earth, nature, and soil itself. Mendieta utilized elemental materials such as blood, sand, soil, leaves, trees, flowers, and feathers to create ephemeral 'earth-body sculptures.' She meticulously documented the spiritual essence of these transient works through color and black-and-white photography, as well as Super-8 film.
Curated by Stephanie Rosenthal, chief curator at the Hayward Gallery in London, this exhibition was prepared in collaboration with Galerie Rudolfinum. Rosenthal, known for organizing significant exhibitions and retrospectives, brings her expertise to showcase Mendieta's work, which is increasingly being rediscovered for its contemporary relevance. The exhibition also includes a presentation of the documentary 'Ana Mendieta, Nature Inside,' featuring previously unseen Super-8 films and authentic sound recordings by the artist.
