Curatorial context

Jan Langhans, a preeminent portrait photographer in Bohemia, operated his studio from 1888 to 1948, capturing hundreds of thousands of individuals. Following the Communist takeover, his studio was nationalized, and the photographic gallery's collection was eventually warehoused outside Prague. A significant rediscovery occurred in the autumn of 1998 when approximately 300 boxes of glass negatives, a substantial portion of the Langhans Gallery's archive, were found before the planned renovation of the original studio building. This discovery resurrected not only the legacy of Jan Langhans but also a crucial element of Czech national identity, bringing to light the visages of leading figures across the arts, sciences, and politics. This project was a notable part of the official program for "Prague 2000 European City of Culture." Curated by Zuzana Meisnerová and Petr Nedoma, the exhibition delves into the rich history of the Atelier Langhans and its photographic legacy, presenting both celebrated personalities and lesser-known individuals through the evocative medium of glass negatives.
