Curatorial context

Barbara Probst's work delves into the fragmentation of perspective through the simultaneous capture of a single scene by multiple cameras, disrupting the viewer's singular viewpoint and offering a multiplication of the 'decisive moment'. The exhibition 'Úplné znejistění' (Total Uncertainty) showcases her installation 'Co se skutečně stalo' (What Really Happened, 1997-8) and over twenty-five photographic series from her long-term project 'Exposures' (2000-2013). Probst, born in Munich in 1964, lives between Germany and the USA. Her conceptually rich work, which contrasts with the Düsseldorf School's documentary approach, creates fictional mental spaces. The installation 'Co se skutečně stalo' is an 81-slide projection simulating infinite backward motion, exploring the relationship between the individual and their place in the world. The 'Exposures' series, employing two to thirteen cameras capturing images simultaneously, presents a fractured reality and challenges the viewer's traditional relationship with photographic series and the concept of the 'decisive moment', drawing inspiration from filmmakers like Jean-Luc Godard.
