Curatorial context

Galerie Rudolfinum features 'Eberhard Havekost. Logik,' an exhibition dedicated to the German artist Eberhard Havekost (b. 1967), a leading representative of painters who utilize digital visual language. This exhibition presents an author's selection of Havekost's works from the past ten years, marking their first showing in the Czech Republic. Havekost's meticulous painting practice is rooted in everyday and mediated reality, incorporating motifs from television, print advertisements, and his own photographs of nature, portraits, and architecture. His work critically examines aspects of repetition, the tracking of time changes, and fundamentally questions the nature of motif, title, form, and content in contemporary art. The exhibition's curator, Petr Nedoma, highlights Havekost's process, which begins with photography that is intelligently modified on a computer. Havekost aims to create images that, despite an apparent accurate description of reality, move towards a non-objective message by reducing the meanings of depictions. This approach emphasizes the image itself, often appearing abstract and alienated from its original purpose, serving as a springboard for discussions about a world overwhelmed by depiction. The quality of the image, unburdened by overt meanings, remains paramount, functioning as a support structure to question the superficiality of modern visual culture. In the context of contemporary painting, Havekost's work is often compared to that of Luc Tuymans and Gerhard Richter, though Havekost's engagement with the de-emphasis of theme and content distinguishes him.
