Curatorial context
Jiří Černický's exhibition 'Wild Dreams' delves into his characteristic environmental, social, and para-scientific themes, presenting them in a shifted mode that explores the encounters between the high and the low, the predictable and the unexpected. The project comprises more than fifty drawings, alongside an equal number of objects and installations, with over half created specifically for this exhibition. Černický allows for the interference of artefacts and environment, inviting viewers into the conceptual space of a scientist, collector, or even a mad researcher who is unafraid to engage with the 'living flesh.' The exhibition offers a complex dreamscape, leaving the exact meaning of Černický's wild dreams open to interpretation.
Jiří Černický, born in Ústí nad Labem in 1966, has been a prominent figure on the Czech art scene since the early nineties. As a recipient of the Jindřich Chalupecký Award and currently heading the Studio of Painting at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, he collaborates with professionals across various fields. His early work included performances, and he gained recognition for projects like 'The First Serially Produced Schizophrenia' (1998), which famously transformed motorcycle helmets into a grimace inspired by Munch's 'The Scream'. Černický primarily works with painting, sculpture, and multimedia installations, but his artistic practice also extends to book illustration and music.
