Exhibition summary

Reality Check showcases the work of sixteen artists, with a shared belief in photography's ability to transform real experience into poetry. The exhibition examines contemporary British photography and video through various artistic strategies beyond simple realism.

Curatorial context

The exhibition 'Reality Check' represents a collaboration between the British Council and The Photographers’ Gallery, featuring sixteen artists who have either been born in Britain or chosen it as their home. Rather than aiming for a comprehensive overview of the current scene, the exhibition unites diverse works by emerging and established artists under the common conviction that the camera can transmute lived experience into a poetic domain. Inspired by actual things in the real world – events, people, relationships, places, objects – 'Reality Check' oscillates between various planes of truth and imagination, perception and pretense. The artists consciously avoid a purely realistic or documentary approach to photography. Instead, they employ a rich spectrum of artistic strategies, including parody, allegory, comedic elements, appropriation, voyeurism, performance, and anecdote, to expand the possibilities of video and photography in describing the world around us. At the dawn of the new century, following a decade of promoting "Cool Britannia," this exhibition offers a timely "reality check" on the state of contemporary British photography and video.
