The exhibition "Faces. The Phenomenon of the Face in Video Art" examines the enduring significance of the human face in art, particularly through the lens of video art. Since the advent of film and video, artists have utilized these new media to explore the face in ways previously impossible in traditional portraiture. The exhibition features eighteen works from key video artists from the 1960s to the present, demonstrating the powerful alliance formed between the face and video over the past fifty years. Video and video installations have enabled the depiction of facial aspects and their meanings that older visual media could not capture, specifically the movement and dynamic expression of the face. This has led to a re-examination of fundamental art historical themes such as the relationship between appearance and self, the exploration of identity, the expression of emotions, and the representation of mental states.
