Curatorial context

The exhibition 'Zhanna Kadyrova: UNEXPECTED' delves into the artist's profound engagement with the realities of war in Ukraine. Following the full-scale invasion in February 2022, Kadyrova found herself displaced and re-evaluating her artistic practice. Seeking refuge in the Carpathian village of Berezov, she grappled with the role of an artist amidst brutality and the necessity of her contribution. This exhibition becomes a powerful testament to her process, giving voice to objects and materials that narrate the Ukrainian fight for freedom against Russian aggression. The exhibition features significant installations such as 'Shots' (2022–2023), a horizontal arrangement of tiles broken by the impact of missiles, and 'Harmless War' (2023), a cycle of white-painted geometric forms crafted from sheets of metal pierced by shrapnel during the invasion. These works stand as potent symbols of destruction and resilience. The exhibition also traces Kadyrova's deeply personal journey from 2014 to the present day. A poignant conclusion is offered by 'Refugees' (2023), comprising images of plants that survived occupation, alongside live plants brought by Kadyrova from Ukraine to Germany and then to Prague, now finding temporary shelter within the Galerie Rudolfinum.
