BERG Contemporary Celebrates Finnbogi Pétursson as Visual Artist of the Year 2026

Presented by Minister of Culture Logi Einarsson at Austurbæjarbíó on March 11, the honor highlights Pétursson's acclaimed exhibition Quake at the LÁ Art Museum.

Born in 1959 and trained at the Icelandic School of Art and Crafts alongside the Jan Van Eyck Academy in the Netherlands, the artist has long bridged visual arts, music, and performance. His installations range from large architectural scales to delicate, sound-producing objects designed to heighten awareness of acoustic environments and their impact on human perception.
According to the award jury, his recent exhibition Quake successfully brings together the core themes that have defined his career, inspiring fellow artists, scholars, and gallery visitors alike.
A Global Legacy in Icelandic Contemporary Art
Pétursson’s career spans major international venues and institutions, including the National Gallery of Iceland, the Reykjavík Art Museum, the Stedelijk Museum in the Netherlands, the Moderna Museet in Sweden, and the Sean Kelly Gallery in the US. Notably, he represented Iceland at the Venice Biennale in 2001 and received the Gerður Helgadóttir Award in 2022 for his contributions to sculptural and spatial art.
