Gúttó Exhibition: Cultural Heritage and Social History of the Templar House in Hafnarfjörður

This exhibition explores the history of the Good Templar house in Hafnarfjörður, a building that served as the town's first true community center. Visitors can learn about the history of the Templar order and the diverse social and cultural events that have taken place in the building for over 130 years.

Built in 1886, the Good Templar house—commonly known as 'Gúttó'—was a landmark construction for the small community of Hafnarfjörður, capable of accommodating 300 people at a time when the town's total population was just over 400. For over a century, the building functioned as the primary center for social activity, meetings, and entertainment in the region. It holds historical significance as the site of the first meeting of the Hafnarfjörður town council, marking the inception of local governance. The current exhibition sheds light on the building's rich history, focusing on the Good Templar order and the legacy of its activities. It documents how the space served as a cradle for the town's social and cultural development, bridging the gap between local history and the evolving community identity of Hafnarfjörður.
