Exhibition summary

This exhibition explores the infamous 'Affair of the Diamond Necklace' that scandalized the court of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette in 1785. Through archival documents, portraits, and decorative arts, it analyzes the scandal's role as a reflection of the political and social unrest in pre-Revolutionary France.

Curatorial context

The Musée des Arts décoratifs de Strasbourg and the National Archives in Paris have collaborated to present the first exhibition dedicated to the 'Affair of the Diamond Necklace.' This major scandal, which broke out on August 15, 1785, involving Cardinal de Rohan and Queen Marie-Antoinette, became a symbol of the political and social upheavals in France on the eve of the Revolution. By utilizing records from the judicial investigation, contemporary testimonies, and collections of the protagonists, the exhibition illuminates the complex story of the affair and its representation in public opinion through pamphlets, songs, and art. Beyond the dramatic narrative, the exhibition provides a context for the mounting social and political tensions of the period, including the debt crisis and the questioning of royal privileges. In addition to the main exhibition, a dedicated circuit is installed in the apartments of the Palais Rohan until June 21, 2027, highlighting the life, career, and collections of Cardinal de Rohan. This complementary display features precious decorative arts, textiles, and books, offering a nuanced view of the prince-bishop’s lifestyle and the prestige of the high clergy at the end of the Ancien Régime.
