Exhibition summary

This exhibition explores the complex relationship between humans and animals through history, shifting from the perception of animals as objects to recognizing their role in the wider ecosystem. It presents a unique dialogue between natural history specimens from the Zoological Museum and contemporary artworks from the MAMCS.

Curatorial context

The animal world has long served as a fundamental source of inspiration for artistic creation, from the earliest cave paintings to the present day. This exhibition examines the complex, often ambiguous human relationship with other species, exploring themes of fascination, otherness, and mutual dependence. While animals were historically viewed as objects or beasts of burden, this project highlights an evolving perspective that prioritizes the interconnectedness of our shared ecosystem. Organized on the occasion of the reopening of the Zoological Museum, the exhibition creates a powerful dialogue between natural history collections and contemporary artworks held at the MAMCS. By placing these diverse objects side-by-side, the curators invite visitors to reconsider their own place within the biodiversity of the living world, reflecting on how artists continue to act as crucial witnesses to our natural environment.
