Exhibition summary

This major institutional retrospective at the Musée Tomi Ungerer explores the vast oeuvre of cartoonist F’murrr, ranging from his iconic 'Génie des Alpages' series to his press illustrations. The exhibition bridges his historical comic legacy with contemporary perspectives through new graphic commentaries created specifically for the show by artist Camille Potte.

Curatorial context

The Musée Tomi Ungerer – International Illustration Centre presents its largest exhibition to date dedicated to the influential cartoonist F’murrr (1946–2018). Renowned for his seminal work on 'Génie des Alpages' in the 1970s, F’murrr established himself as a key figure in humorous comics, characterized by philosophical sheep and an enduring commitment to the absurd. The exhibition offers a thorough exploration of his career, moving beyond his most famous works to examine his political comics such as 'Le Char de l’État dérape sur le sentier de la guerre' and his various independent narrative projects featuring notable female protagonists. In addition to his comic strips, the exhibition provides an unprecedented look at F’murrr’s extensive illustration work, highlighting his contributions to journals, publishing houses, and agencies. To create a dialogue across generations, the museum has invited contemporary illustrator Camille Potte to contribute graphic comments that interact with F’murrr’s original works. This collaboration acts as an 'echo' that connects the artist’s rich legacy to the pulse of contemporary drawing. Curated by Anna Sailer, the exhibition is presented in conjunction with the 'Rencontres de l’Illustration' in Strasbourg.
