Exhibition summary

This research and memory project focuses on the 'massiv unsichtbar' (massively invisible) air-raid bunker in Schönbornpark, a World War II structure whose presence has been largely hidden over time. It aims to counteract this invisibility by making the historical context and the processes of its disappearance transparent and comprehensible.

Curatorial context

Located in Vienna's Josefstadt district, the Schönbornpark air-raid bunker is a substantial wartime structure built under the Nazi regime's 'Führer-Sofortprogramm' for civilian protection. Its historical characteristic of planned invisibility has persisted, making its exact location often unknown to the public. This project, 'massiv unsichtbar,' by the Volkskundemuseum Wien, confronts this obscurity. The museum, having viewed the bunker's adjacent building as potential expansion space since the late 1940s and even considering the bunker itself as a museum depot from the 1970s, now aims to illuminate the bunker's historical connections and the mechanisms of its disappearance. Through on-site visual and acoustic elements in Schönbornpark and an online platform, the project seeks to make the bunker's history and its erasure processes transparent. The bunker, after being emptied, has been used for performance installations and educational programs, with plans for its future development into an arts, culture, and neighborhood center. The project directly addresses the bunker's historical context, its transformation through urban planning and public perception, and its evolving role from a site of dense danger and oppression during WWII to a space for dialogue and cultural engagement.

Admission and ticket notes

The duration intervention in Schönbornpark is accessible externally and can be visited at any time during park opening hours (daily 7 AM - 9:30 PM). Access to the bunker's interior remains closed as of February 2026. Further details and historical context are available on the project's dedicated website and through online resources, with a sound installation previously featured from October 2025 to January 2026. Information about guided tours and workshops may be available through the museum's general visitor information channels, but specific ticketing for the interior access is not applicable due to its closure.
