Exhibition summary
Open Spaces & Galleries is an initiative at the Austrian Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art for actors working towards a post-migrant and diverse society. It provides a platform for activist groups, artists, and collectives to utilize the spaces for their themes, fostering exchange and networking.
Curatorial context
The exhibition "Open Spaces & Galleries" at the Austrian Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art is dedicated to providing a platform for individuals and groups actively engaged with the utopia of a post-migrant and diverse society. From January 19 to September 29, 2024, the museum's ground-floor spaces, previously housing a permanent exhibition, will be transformed to accommodate these initiatives. Activist groups, artists, collectives, and urban initiatives are invited to occupy these spaces, making them their own and using them to explore their respective themes. This collaborative environment is designed to facilitate informal exchange and networking among participants, fostering the development of ideas for coexistence in a post-migrant city and promoting visions for a future society.
This initiative marks a significant first step for the Volkskundemuseum Wien towards establishing a post-migrant focus. The "Open Spaces" will host various actors, including Crip Magazine, Decolonizing in Vienna!, Fremde werden Freunde, and others, enabling them to present their work and ideas. During May and June, climate activists will be hosted as part of the Klima Biennale Wien, and the "Open Galleries" will serve as offices for the Wiener Festwochen's "Haus der Republik." The project involves extensive curatorial and production efforts, with contributions to spatial concepts, sculptural solutions, graphic design, and more from various individuals and collaborators.
