Curatorial context

The project 'Turning Points – Museums for a Democratic Future' is a collaborative EU-Interreg initiative between the Museum of the City of Bratislava and the Volkskundemuseum Wien, running from December 2025 to July 2028. It focuses on visualizing central societal turning points and upheavals from recent decades, examining their connections to social transformations through personal objects and individual life histories. The project aims to analyze current developments from multiple perspectives and investigates how museums can fulfill their democratic mandate during politically tense times. Centered on Vienna, Bratislava, and the historically significant region between them, 'Turning Points' seeks to establish transnational and supra-regional networks to discuss processes of democratization, liberalization, and other societal shifts, thereby fostering political discourse and cultural participation. As part of the project, two distinct buildings will be revitalized for cultural and democracy-building purposes: a former air-raid shelter in Vienna will become a versatile public space, and a historic building in Bratislava will house a new contemporary history exhibition. The project utilizes collections and archives to convey societal developments and strengthen democratic values, covering the period from the mid-1980s to the present, and incorporates diverse perspectives through oral history interviews and participatory formats.
