A distinctive pair of glasses, famously worn by Schubert, is also on display.

Curatorial context

Franz Schubert's life is inextricably linked with Vienna, his lifelong home where he composed his immortal music, particularly for his circle of friends. The exhibition at his birthplace, the "Schubert Geburtshaus" located at Nußdorfer Straße 54 in the 9th district, is housed in one of the few surviving suburban houses of its time. This building was not only a dwelling but also contained the school operated by Schubert's father. The exhibition on the first floor delves into various biographical stages of the composer's life, presenting his environment, education, and vast musical output through documents, paintings, and audio examples. His prolific work includes over 600 lieder, as well as significant symphonies, choral works, and piano and chamber music. A unique highlight of the exhibition is the display of the characteristic glasses that gave Schubert his unmistakable appearance. The "Schubert Geburtshaus" is currently undergoing renovation focusing on accessibility, with a planned reopening in 2028 to mark the 200th anniversary of Franz Schubert's death. A newly designed permanent exhibition will be unveiled at that time. Previously, the house offered visitors insight into the early life and musical legacy of one of Vienna's most celebrated composers.

Admission and ticket notes

The exhibition is closed for renovation until January 2028. Previously, admission was €5.00 (reduced €4.00), with free entry for those under 19 and on the first Sunday of each month. Details on discounts are available via visitor information.
