Understanding the Role of Austrians in the Spanish Civil War: A 1936 Exhibition

The Spanish Civil War, initiated by a military coup under General Francisco Franco in June 1936, quickly escalated into an international ideological battleground between fascism and anti-fascism. Austria contributed approximately 140 individuals who fought for Franco, while around 1,400 Austrian antifascist volunteers joined the Republican cause, primarily through the "International Brigades." Many of these volunteers were communists and socialists who had faced persecution from the austrofascist regime. Austrians served in various units of the Republican army, notably the "12. Februar" battalion. By the war's end on April 1, 1939, surviving Austrian volunteers were forced to retreat to France, where many were interned in camps. A smaller number found refuge in other countries, while over 450 were sent to Nazi concentration camps. Tragically, more than 319 Austrian volunteers lost their lives in the conflict.
