Curatorial context

Christoph Amann's six-part sound installation, 'Austrian Soundmarks' (67:54 min), was created during the summer months of 2018 at various locations across Austria. The work captures a spectrum of sounds, from natural environments to urban dynamics and atmospheric moments, to create an auditory portrait of the country that encourages mindful listening and reflection. The outdoor recordings were achieved using a custom-built mobile surround microphone setup, allowing for quadraphonic distribution of ambient sounds, an effect that can be experienced in the main exhibition through virtual surround sound with headphones. A compilation of literary quotes related to the themes of the exhibition section 'Das ist Österreich!?' is integrated with the individual soundscapes to form a comprehensive sonic and textual representation of Austria. The installation is a collaboration with the Documentation Centre for Modern Austrian Literature at Literaturhaus Wien. The piece was designed and realized by Christoph Amann, with thanks extended to various individuals and institutions for their contributions to the sound recordings and literary selections. The detailed list of recording locations spans across Vienna, Burgenland, Lower Austria, Salzburg, Tyrol, and Vorarlberg, providing a geographically diverse auditory experience.
