Curatorial context

The web exhibition 'Das Lichtermeer 1993. Ein prägendes Zeichen' (The Sea of Lights 1993. A Defining Symbol) is a participatory project by the House of Austrian History that focuses on the massive demonstration held on January 23, 1993. On this day, around 300,000 people gathered on Vienna's Heldenplatz and in other state capitals to make a statement against racism and exclusion, prompted by the FPÖ's 'Austria First' initiative. The event, described as 'an event of a wonderful kind,' mobilized a broad civil society movement across political divides, addressing xenophobic and racist tendencies and criticizing discriminatory immigration laws. As the largest demonstration in the Second Republic to date, the Lichtermeer transformed Heldenplatz into a symbol of democratic civil society. The exhibition encourages visitors to contribute their own memories, photos, videos, or objects related to the event, further shaping its narrative. Contributions are displayed both online and within the House of Austrian History, with options for permanent donation to the museum's collection. The initiative also led to the formation of the organization SOS Mitmensch, which continues to advocate for human rights.
