Curatorial context

Opening on December 10, 2025, the International Day of Human Rights and the 85th anniversary of the victims' deaths, the exhibition 'Eingestickt' (Embroidered) at the House of Austrian History (hdgö) sheds light on 67 individuals murdered in Hartheim in 1940. The exhibition is an artistic installation created by photographer Ulrike Wieser and historian Melanie Dejnega. It employs the craft of embroidery to highlight the victims, whose lives and deaths were suppressed within family narratives and largely omitted from collective memory. The project aims to recover these obscured histories and place the victims at the center of remembrance. By using embroidery, a traditionally domestic and often overlooked craft, the artists connect personal stories with historical atrocities, urging a deeper engagement with the past and the consequences of NS-era medical crimes. The exhibition is presented in collaboration with hdgö and is located in the museum foyer.
