Keine Leerstellen mehr: Exploring Austria's Minority Groups Through Twelve Historical Objects and Cultural Identity

This exhibition highlights the history and present of minority groups in Austria, focusing on twelve objects selected in collaboration with representatives of these communities. It aims to shed light on the significant contributions and experiences of recognized minorities in shaping Austria's identity.

For exactly 175 years, the rights of various ethnic groups within the territory of the present-day Republic of Austria have been specially protected as part of the constitution. Despite this, the history and present of minorities receive far too little attention even today – including at the House of Austrian History. As a first step in a new direction, the museum, together with representatives of the ethnic groups, has selected two objects each that tell the story of how much the six recognized minorities (Croats, Roma, Slovaks, Slovenes, Czechs, and Hungarians) have shaped Austria. The exhibition serves as an important acknowledgement and a starting point to give these narratives more visibility within the museum's narrative.
