This exhibition delves into the 'virosphere,' exploring the crucial yet often overlooked role of viruses in sustaining life and shaping our symbiotic relationships with other organisms. It speculates on emancipatory, hybrid modes of being and imagines posthuman futures.
The first exhibition of Kunstraum Niederoesterreich’s 2023 annual program, 'Matrix Bodies,' investigates the complex worlds of the 'virosphere.' While viruses often have a negative reputation due to their destructive capabilities, the exhibition highlights their indispensable role in life on Earth, acting as a 'glue' that forms symbiotic relationships with fungi, insects, bacteria, and other organisms. These viral capacities challenge established forms of life, opening up speculative spaces for emancipatory, hybrid modes of being and imagining posthuman futures.
The group exhibition brings together works by artists Eglė Budvytytė, Seba Calfuqueo, Caterina Gobbi, Nona Inescu, Joséfa Ntjam, and Sophie Utikal. These artists shed light on the inseparability of humans and nature, speculating on transcorporeal, chimerical posthuman life forms and forging emancipatory strategies for non-binary, more abundant futures. At a time of ecological crisis, 'Matrix Bodies' examines the expansive, matrix-like webs connecting human and non-human states of being, revealing and envisioning our symbiotic relationships with the world.
