Exhibition summary

This exhibition features Jongsuk Yoon's mural design inspired by the Kumgangsan mountain range, a region symbolizing the geopolitical division of Korea. Yoon's work merges Western Modernism and East Asian traditions to create an anti-monumental landscape painting.

Curatorial context

The exhibition "Jongsuk Yoon. Kumgangsan" showcases a mural design by Jongsuk Yoon, drawing inspiration from the Kumgangsan mountain massif. This region, now located in North Korea, serves as a potent symbol of the unresolved geopolitical conflict and the traumatic aftermath of Korea's division in 1945. Yoon, who has never visited the location herself, employs a painterly approach that synthesizes paradigms of Western Modernism with East Asian traditions, particularly Korean sansuhwa (Mountain and Water Paintings). The resulting artwork is an entirely anti-monumental landscape painting characterized by diaphanous layers of smudged color patches, visible processual traces, and graphic ciphers. These elements coalesce into panoramic "soul landscapes" where "inner" and "outer" perspectives oscillate, offering a profound contemplation on place, division, and artistic interpretation. The exhibition is curated by Heike Eipeldauer. A video featuring an artist talk with Jongsuk Yoon is also available, where she discusses her work 'Kumgansan' and her technique of combining Western and Eastern influences to interpret classical Korean landscape depictions in a modern, abstract manner.
