Curatorial context

Liliane Lijn (b. 1939) has forged a unique path over six decades, engaging with visual art, poetry, and science. Her practice, which began in the late 1950s with kinetic art, delves into experiments with light, energy, and movement, consistently demonstrating an interest in innovative materials and scientific discoveries. The exhibition 'Arise Alive' presents Lijn's most comprehensive institutional solo exhibition to date. It features her category-defying work, which takes inspiration from kinetic art and her experiments with light and energy. In the 1980s, Lijn began creating multimedia sculptures that explored the human body and alternative conceptions of the feminine. By merging the cosmic with the personal, and mythology with high-tech, her interactive works offer contemporary interpretations of female archetypes. The exhibition is jointly organized with Haus der Kunst München and in collaboration with Tate St Ives. A comprehensive monograph on Lijn’s work is also co-published in conjunction with the exhibition. Additionally, a text work adapted for mumok, based on her 1993 carpet design 'Words to Walk On,' is displayed on the external staircase, weaving key terms from her artistic practice into a flowing water motif, exemplifying the significance of language and poetry in her oeuvre.
