Curatorial context

mumok is dedicating a comprehensive retrospective to Medardo Rosso (b. 1858, d. 1928), an Italian-French artist recognized as one of the great pioneers of modernism. Known as an artist, artisan, art theorist, and proto-installation artist, Rosso challenged conventions with his processual, repetitive, and anti-heroic approach to sculpture. The exhibition features about fifty sculptures, a large selection of photographs, photocollages, and drawings, offering a thorough analysis of his methods. In line with Rosso's own practice of exhibiting in dialogue with others, the retrospective includes works by artists directly or indirectly influenced by him. This creates a conversation between Rosso’s groundbreaking and hermetic work and the practices of artists such as Francis Bacon, Nairy Baghramian, Phyllida Barlow, Lynda Benglis, Louise Bourgeois, Constantin Brâncuși, Edgar Degas, Alberto Giacometti, David Hammons, Eva Hesse, Marisa Merz, Robert Morris, and Andy Warhol. This expanded retrospective is organized in close collaboration with the Medardo Rosso Estate and will travel to Kunstmuseum Basel.
