Exhibition summary

Nikima Jagudajev's 'Basically' is an ongoing live project transforming the exhibition space into a hybrid production area and playground. Structured as a choreographic game, it involves performers and visitors in an evolving environment that explores themes of 're-schooling' and integrative practices through unexpected encounters.

Curatorial context

Curated by Marianne Dobner, 'Basically' is an ongoing live project by Nikima Jagudajev that re-imagines the exhibition space as a production area and playground. The work is structured as a choreographic game where performers maintain constant rules while incorporating visitors in visible and invisible ways. Central to the project is the creation and re-creation of the environment, with each presentation being a moment in a long-term, large-scale work. Visitors are invited to witness and become part of an open-world, role-playing game, experiencing the characters that bring 'Basically' into existence. Jagudajev developed 're-schooling,' a practice inspired by students' playful subversions of educational systems, focusing on acts like self-organized play and informal interactions within an institutional context. In 'Basically,' the exhibition space itself becomes a setting for these activities: eating, conversing, making clothes and music, and surreptitiously playing a game. The project is characterized by its continuous, ever-evolving nature, where new elements—such as the venue, the team's interests and skills, and installed objects—remake the constellation. Visitors' presence contributes to this expanding ecosystem, meaning their experience varies depending on their arrival time. 'Basically' proposes a messy, accessible, uncontrollable, and spontaneous environment open to contamination, offering choreography as a way to relate to art as an integrative, prefigurative practice through unexpected encounters.
