Curatorial context

nowhere / now here. A Performance Festival, curated by Marianne Dobner and Christine Standfest, delves into the complex relationship between live art and its documentation. The festival features live performances by eight contemporary choreographers who push the boundaries of stage dance and investigate presence and performativity within the museum context. These new works are presented in dialogue with performative video art from the 1960s and 1970s, drawn from the mumok collection. This historical material addresses various social taboos, body images, and oppressive conventions that profoundly influenced contemporary art. The festival's dual structure, reflected in its title, weaves together the live program with historical film footage. It highlights how ephemeral live performances become image-based art through documentary material, finding their way into museum collections. The exhibition acknowledges the heritage of 1960s and 1970s performance art while also differentiating itself from it. The architecture of the festival space itself transforms with each live performance, leaving traces within the venue.
