Exhibition summary

This exhibition delves into the history of public swimming pools in 'Red Vienna,' coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the Amalienbad. It explores the development of various types of municipal baths, from 'Tröpferlbäder' to grand swimming complexes, reflecting the social and technical advancements of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Curatorial context

Opening in July 2026, 'Auch für Nichtschwimmer' (Also for Non-Swimmers) marks the 100th birthday of the Amalienbad by immersing visitors in the rich history of public bathing facilities during Vienna's 'Red Vienna' era. The exhibition examines the diverse municipal baths available during the First Republic, including the functional 'Tröpferlbäder' (showers baths), Strom- (channel), Strand- (beach), and Sommerbäder (summer pools), as well as children's, indoor, and warm water pools. Each bath's origin story is presented as a reflection of the technical innovations and socio-political conditions of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The exhibition highlights the Amalienbad as the crowning achievement of 'Red Vienna's' bathing construction, conceived as a 'luxury bath for the working class' and opened in 1926 with a groundbreaking integrated health and spa department. It contrasts this with the earlier, more basic 'Tröpferlbäder' and the subsequent modernization and expansion under the social democratic municipal administration, which also saw the integration of communal baths into new housing complexes. The text further details the development of 'Strom-bäder' along the Danube Canal, the transformation of the Gänsehäufel into a major outdoor pool, and the strategic construction of large baths in the western districts. Finally, it notes the significant increase in visitor numbers from four million in 1913 to nearly eleven million by 1932, underscoring how bathing became accessible to a much broader population.
