Curatorial context

Complementing the 'Heldenplatz ’29' exhibition, the Waschsalon, in cooperation with Prof. Heinz Weiss, presented 'Otto Felix Kanitz. Vom Kinderfreund zum Organisator des Jugendtreffens'. This exhibition delved into the life of Otto Felix Kanitz, a significant figure in the socialist youth movement and education. Kanitz advocated for a shift in the approach of the Kinderfreunde (Children's Friends) organization, moving from mere welfare to active educational work. In 1919, he founded Austria's first self-governing 'Children's Republic' in Gmünd and was appointed head of the education school at Schönbrunn Palace. The exhibition also touched upon his literary work, such as the picture story 'Nazi' (a pet name for Ignatz) which began in 1924, and the suppression of his writings, including 'Kämpfer der Zukunft' (Fighter of the Future), which was classified as 'worthy of burning' during the book burnings in Berlin in 1933. Tragically, Otto Felix Kanitz was arrested by the Gestapo in 1938 and died in the Buchenwald concentration camp in March 1940.
