This 'extra edition' presents press articles, polemics, and caricatures related to the creation of the Karl-Marx-Hof, commemorating its 80th anniversary. It highlights a media campaign from 1927 warning of the building's alleged danger, intended to discredit Vienna's housing program.
In commemoration of the 80th birthday of the Karl-Marx-Hof, 'Das Rote Wien im Waschsalon' presented a specially curated 'Extra Edition.' This presentation compiled press articles, polemics, and caricatures surrounding the genesis of this iconic building of Red Vienna. The Karl-Marx-Hof was officially opened on October 12, 1930, by Mayor Karl Seitz. However, its construction was preceded by years of media slander and smear campaigns, notably initiated by a 1927 'Extra Edition' of the Christian Social Reichspost. This publication warned the public about the supposed danger of collapse of the 'giant building on Heiligenstädterstraße,' with the clear intention of discrediting the municipal housing program and diverting construction back to private developers and speculators. At the opening ceremony, tens of thousands of people gathered, alongside the new residents. Mayor Seitz expressed his 'sincere regret that fourteen hundred Viennese families would be forced to move into a building that by law should have already collapsed.' The Arbeiter-Zeitung wryly headlined the following day: 'There it stands, the 'collapsed building.'' The 'Extra Edition' itself was curated by Lilli Bauer and Werner T. Bauer, with graphics by Karin Pesau-Engelhart and Klaus Mitter, and editing by scriptophil. die textagentur.
