Curatorial context
The exhibition "Eisenbeton. Anatomie einer Metropole" offers a new perspective on "Vienna around 1900," moving beyond the city's glamorous facade to examine its underlying structure. It highlights reinforced concrete as a revolutionary technology that, from the 1890s onwards, not only enabled the construction of vital infrastructure like water systems, sewage, and the city railway but also gave rise to versatile buildings housing theaters, variety shows, cinemas, cafes, offices, and residences. This period saw an exciting interplay of urban culture, new media, and innovative building techniques, tragically cut short by World War I.
Through models, plans, photographs, paintings, posters, and original furnishings, the exhibition brings famous and lesser-known reinforced concrete structures in Vienna around 1900 to life. These technical marvels, from the Zacherlhaus to the Looshaus, the Residenzpalast to the Dianabad, were central to the accelerated, varied, and increasingly challenging urban existence of the modern era, revealing their crucial role in the daily lives of Viennese people.
