This exhibition explores the lives of approximately 20,000 people from Latin America and the Caribbean living in Vienna. It showcases their diverse migration experiences since 1945 through interviews, photographs, documents, and textiles, highlighting themes of belonging, cultural roots, and new beginnings in a foreign environment.
Viena Latina – Leben zwischen den Welten delves into the vibrant lives of the approximately 20,000 individuals from Latin America and the Caribbean residing in Vienna today. These communities actively contribute to the city's cultural landscape in numerous ways. The exhibition is part of a large-scale, EU-funded project (CERV program) that collects diverse migration experiences since 1945, focusing on encounter, participation, and dialogue. Individuals from around 20 Latin American and Caribbean countries, representing various generations and life paths, share their personal stories through interviews, photographs, documents, textile works, and collaborative city walks, creating a new, multi-voiced archive that enriches Vienna's culture of remembrance.
The exhibition translates these collected impressions for a broader audience, with chapters narrating the experience of living between worlds, maintaining one's roots, and embarking on a new life in an unfamiliar setting. It maps significant locations for Latin American-Caribbean communities in Vienna and reflects the thoughts and feelings that arise when people with shared, yet deeply personal, migration experiences engage in dialogue. The curatorial team, including Marcela Torres Heredia, Michaela Kronberger, and Cati Krüger, along with numerous collaborators, has brought together a rich tapestry of personal narratives and community perspectives.
