Yorkshire Air Museum Marks 40 Years of Aviation Heritage in York
The Yorkshire Air Museum and Allied Air Forces Memorial recently celebrated its milestone 40th anniversary, marking four decades since the former RAF Elvington airfield hosted its very first public opening day. Established as a registered charitable trust in 1985, the site has grown into a major destination for aviation history and military heritage enthusiasts.

The anniversary gathering brought together former volunteers, founding supporters, and visitors to commemorate the institution's history. The highlight of the celebration was an aerial display featuring three vintage aircraft, echoing the site's inaugural open day in 1985. Among the flying machines was a Blackburn B2 from the Shuttleworth Collection—the very type of aircraft that flew over the airfield four decades prior.

Rachel Semlyen MBE, Chair of Trustees and a founding member, welcomed attendees and cut a commemorative anniversary cake to mark the occasion.

- Avro 504K (Replica): Representing one of the most widely produced training aircraft of the First World War, this replica was crafted by apprentices and has traveled internationally for significant centenary commemorations, including events in France.
