Allard Pierson Museum in Amsterdam Extends Partnership to Preserve Medical History Collection
The Allard Pierson Museum in Amsterdam has renewed its long-standing collaboration with the Royal Dutch Medical Association (KNMG) to ensure the continued preservation and accessibility of a significant historical medical collection. The agreement solidifies the museum’s role in housing and maintaining the extensive archive, benefiting future generations of researchers, medical professionals, and the general public.
Preserving a Unique Medical Archive for Amsterdam's Visitors
This renewed partnership, formalized by Allard Pierson director Els van der Plas and KNMG director Astraia Rühl, continues a historical association that dates back to 1855. The collection, comprising approximately 40,000 titles, has been under the care of the Allard Pierson since 2005. The museum provides optimal conditions for the management, conservation, and accessibility of these invaluable historical documents.
Astraia Rühl highlighted the enduring value of this collaboration, noting the Allard Pierson's decades of experience in managing academic heritage. This expertise makes the museum an ideal partner for safeguarding such a unique medical-historical collection. Housing the collection at the Allard Pierson guarantees that this wealth of knowledge and history will be professionally preserved for researchers, medical practitioners, and other interested individuals for years to come.
Visitors and researchers can explore the collection through the online catalog of the UvA Library and directly within the Allard Pierson's research room.
