National Maritime Museum (Scheepvaartmuseum) Amsterdam

The building that now houses the National Maritime Museum, originally known as 's Lands Zeemagazijn or Admiraliteits Magazijn, was constructed in 1656. This structure was designed to serve as a naval storehouse.

The historic building occupied by Het Scheepvaartmuseum, which was originally a naval storehouse ('s Lands Zeemagazijn), was designed by the Dutch architect Daniël Stalpaert. Its construction was completed in 1656 under his design.

The Maritime Museum, known as Het Scheepvaartmuseum in Dutch, was officially established in 1916. It focuses on maritime history and contains a vast collection of artifacts related to shipping and sailing.

The National Maritime Museum relocated to its current location in 1973, taking over the former naval storehouse known as 's Lands Zeemagazijn. This move placed the museum's extensive collection within a historically significant building.

A detailed replica of the 18th-century VOC ship _Amsterdam_, which historically sailed between the Netherlands and the East Indies, was constructed over a five-year period from 1985 to 1990. This replica is now moored outside the museum.

Het Scheepvaartmuseum underwent an extensive renovation period between 2007 and 2011. Following these significant works, the museum officially reopened its doors to the public on October 2, 2011.

The courtyard of the museum features a distinct glass roof, whose design was inspired by the compass rose and rhumb lines commonly found on old nautical charts. This architectural element reflects the museum's maritime theme.

The institution, previously known as Nederlands Scheepvaartmuseum Amsterdam (Netherlands Maritime Museum Amsterdam), was officially renamed to Het Scheepvaartmuseum (The Maritime Museum) at an unspecified time, streamlining its identity.
