A Sidelong GlanceThe site of Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam has a notable past, with Carel Joseph Fodor acquiring the buildings on Keizersgracht before 1860. This location later housed Museum Fodor, an exhibition space open from 1863 until 1994, followed by the Nederlands Vormgevingsinstituut until 2001. Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam itself emerged from the vision of Paul Huf and Eva Besnyö. The museum received city council permission in November 2001 and opened its doors for the first time in December of that year. Following a major renovation by BenthemCrouwel, which unified three buildings into a modern museum, the official opening took place in June 2002. Since 2007, Foam has also organized the Paul Huf Award, an international prize recognizing emerging photographers.
