STRAAT Museum in Amsterdam Welcomes Frankey’s Interactive Installation Lucky Dragon
Visitors exploring street art on the NDSM wharf in Amsterdam can now experience a prominent new addition to the permanent collection at STRAAT Museum. The museum has integrated Lucky Dragon, a monumental installation by Dutch artist Frankey—widely known for his work as Streetart Frankey.
Discovering Lucky Dragon at STRAAT Museum
Measuring four by four meters, the installation depicts a good-luck dragon supported by a child, which serves as a realistic eight-year-old representation of the artist himself. Using a tree branch and a skateboard, the young figure props up the creature while inviting direct visitor engagement. When guests offer a high five to the outstretched hand of the young figure, the dragon’s heart lights up to radiate good fortune. An additional sculptural element places a second 'Little Frankey' figure on the stairs inside the museum, seated with the dragon on its lap.
The artwork first appeared during Hong Kong Art Week. Its concept draws from the traditional Chinese dragon dance and Frankey's observations during a visit to Hong Kong, where the frequency of the number eight and its cultural significance as a lucky symbol inspired him to blend adult cultural symbolism with childhood fantasy.
The Artistic Journey of Streetart Frankey
Active for over two decades, Frankey began transforming urban elements in the Netherlands into artistic canvases after reading Banksy’s Wall and Piece. His career encompasses more than 800 local street interventions in Amsterdam alongside dozens of permanent global installations, including well-known creations such as Darth Fisher and Canal Skybridge, as well as a weekly column in Het Parool.
