Oude Kerk (Old Church) Amsterdam: An Ancient Cultural Venue

Around 1213, a wooden chapel was erected at the site of the Oude Kerk, serving as the earliest known structure before it was replaced by a stone church.

The wooden chapel was replaced by a stone church, which was consecrated in 1306 as a Roman Catholic church by the bishop of Utrecht, dedicated to Saint Nicolas.

The Oude Kerk holds historical significance as the oldest parish church in Amsterdam and is considered the oldest surviving structure in the city, tracing its origins back to the early 13th century.

In 1345, the Oude Kerk became the site of the 'Miracle of Amsterdam,' where a consecrated Host reportedly did not burn in a fire after being vomited by a dying man, leading to an annual Catholic celebration.

Approximately half a century after its consecration, the Oude Kerk underwent its first alterations, during which the aisles were lengthened and wrapped around the choir in a half circle to provide structural support.

Not long after the turn of the 15th century, north and south transepts were added to the church, creating its cross formation. Work on these significant renovations was completed by 1460.

Progress on the church's renovations was significantly interrupted by a great fire that besieged the city of Amsterdam in 1421.

A second major fire in Amsterdam in 1452 further interrupted the ongoing construction and renovation progress on the Oude Kerk.

During the Beeldenstorm of 1566, a mob looted and defaced the church, destroying most of its religious art and fittings, including an altarpiece by Jan van Scorel and Maarten van Heemskerck.

Following the Alteratie (Reformation) in Amsterdam in 1578, the Oude Kerk transitioned from Roman Catholic to a Calvinist Dutch Reformed Church, a denomination it retains today.

Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck began his renowned career as the Oude Kerk's organist at the age of fifteen, succeeding his deceased father around 1577 and later composing music for all 150 Psalms.

The Oude Kerk saw the construction of its 'old church organ' in 1658, which is one of four pipe organs currently housed within the building.

Saskia van Uylenburgh, the wife of renowned painter Rembrandt, was buried in the Oude Kerk in 1642. Her tomb is briefly illuminated by the morning sun each year on March 9th.

In 1681, the choir of the Oude Kerk was closed off with an oak screen, marking a significant internal architectural alteration reflecting the Calvinist rejection of previous practices.

Also in 1681, the Oude Kerk began serving as the city's registry of marriages and housed the city archives, with important documents stored securely in the iron chapel.

German builder Christian Vater constructed a Baroque organ in 1724, which was immediately recognized by church commissioners as 'perfect' and remains one of Europe's finest Baroque organs.

The Vater organ was temporarily dismantled in 1738 during renovations to the church tower. Upon reassembly, Casper Müller made alterations to enhance its sound, leading to its designation as the Vater-Müller organ.

A cabinet organ was built for the Oude Kerk in 1767, adding another musical instrument to the church's collection of four distinct pipe organs.

The practice of burying local citizens within the confines of the Oude Kerk came to an end in 1865, marking a significant change in the church's long-standing role as a burial site.

In 2010, Organi Puccini of Pisa constructed the fourth pipe organ for the Oude Kerk, further enriching the church's musical heritage and capabilities.

Since 2012, the Oude Kerk has expanded its role to also house contemporary art exhibitions, commissioning site-specific installations from various artists.

The historic Vater-Müller organ, one of Europe's finest Baroque organs, underwent a complete and extensive restoration process between 2014 and 2019 to preserve its unique sound and structure.

The Oude Kerk holds the formal designation of a Dutch Rijksmonument (national heritage site), recognizing its significant historical and architectural importance in the Netherlands.
